The story
They Wanted My Silence: a story about the price of speaking up
Most doctors who move abroad do it for the same reason: their family. Better schools, a safer future, a chance to give their children more than they had. They Wanted My Silence begins in exactly that place.
Ali is a doctor who is content with a quiet life: late nights by the river and weekends with his parents in Loqman. A friend’s advice and the growing needs of his family lead him to Marazi, a glittering desert city that seems to promise opportunity. The hospitals are modern and polished. The future looks secure.
A system that runs on silence
Behind the polished buildings, Ali finds a very different system. Careers are controlled by paperwork. Favours are exchanged for silence. Powerful interests can make the cost of refusing impossible to ignore, and they do not need to raise their voices to do it.
Then a prepared cancellation is placed across his desk, and an accusation is made against his wife. Ali has to decide what he is willing to sign to protect the people he loves.
He signs. But the signature is not the end of his story.
What follows is years of struggle: to protect his family, to defend his name, and to make sure his voice is finally heard.
A true story, told through Ali
The book is a personal account. The names of people and places have been changed, and the story is told through Ali, but the experience at its heart is real. Changing the names keeps the focus where it belongs: on what happens to an ordinary professional when a system decides that his silence is worth more than his rights.
Who it is for
This is a book for anyone who has worked far from home and felt how little power a single employee holds. It is for doctors and other professionals weighing a move abroad, for families who have been through the same pressure, and for readers of true stories about injustice and the courage it takes to speak.
It is also a book about what silence costs, and why some people decide, in the end, that they will not stay quiet.
They Wanted My Silence is available as a Kindle eBook and a paperback on Amazon, and is free to read with Kindle Unlimited.
